LASIK FAQs

What is LASIK, and how does it work?

LASIK is a laser vision correction procedure that reshapes your cornea and improves how light is focused on your retina. This helps correct common refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. At NJ Eye and Ear LASIK Center, we use Contoura® Vision topography-guided LASIK, which maps the unique curvature of your eye for an exceptionally personalized treatment. The procedure is bladeless, safe, and precise, offering many patients 20/20 vision or better without glasses or contacts.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for LASIK?

You might be a good candidate for LASIK if you’re over 18, have a stable vision prescription for at least a year, and are in good general health. Your corneas should have sufficient thickness, and your eyes should be free of conditions like severe dry eye, keratoconus, or glaucoma. Dr. Hu will conduct a thorough evaluation to determine if LASIK is right for you. If not, other vision correction options like PRK or EVO ICL™ may be more appropriate.

Is LASIK a painful procedure?

No, LASIK is not painful. Before the procedure begins, numbing eye drops are applied to ensure your complete comfort. You may feel a bit of pressure during certain parts of the surgery, but most patients report minimal discomfort. The entire procedure takes less than 15 minutes for both eyes, and you can typically go home shortly after it’s complete.

What can I expect during LASIK recovery?

Most patients notice significantly improved vision within 24 hours. You may experience mild dryness, light sensitivity, or blurry vision for the first day or two, but these usually resolve quickly. Dr. Hu will provide detailed aftercare instructions and prescribe lubricating eye drops to support your healing. You’ll return for follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery and results.

How long do the results of LASIK last?

For many patients, LASIK results are permanent. The cornea is permanently reshaped, so your refractive error is corrected long-term. However, your eyes may still undergo natural changes as you age, particularly after age 40, when presbyopia (age-related near vision loss) can develop. If you experience vision changes later, enhancements or other treatments may be discussed.

How safe is LASIK?

LASIK is one of the most studied and successful procedures in modern medicine, with over 96% patient satisfaction. The risks are extremely low when performed by a skilled surgeon like Dr. Hu, who is fellowship-trained in cornea and refractive surgery. NJ Eye and Ear LASIK Center also uses the latest diagnostic technologies to ensure the highest safety standards are met.

Are there any risks or side effects?

As with any surgical procedure, LASIK carries some risks, though they are rare. Potential side effects include dry eye, glare or halos around lights, and slight under- or over-correction. Most side effects are temporary and resolve during the healing period. At NJ Eye and Ear, we perform comprehensive screenings to minimize risk and customize your treatment plan.

What if I’m nervous about eye surgery?

It’s perfectly normal to feel anxious about a procedure involving your eyes. At NJ Eye and Ear, your comfort is a top priority. Dr. Hu and our team will talk you through every step, answer all your questions, and offer oral medication to help you relax before the procedure if needed.

Can I get LASIK if I have astigmatism?

Yes, LASIK is highly effective for treating astigmatism. The laser technology reshapes the cornea to correct the uneven curvature that causes blurred or distorted vision. In fact, Contoura Vision topography-guided LASIK is especially well-suited to address astigmatism accurately.

How soon can I return to work or normal activities?

Most patients can return to work and resume normal activities within 24 to 48 hours after LASIK. However, for the first week, you should avoid strenuous exercise, swimming, eye makeup, and rubbing your eyes. Dr. Hu will give you detailed instructions based on your recovery progress.
