What to Expect During Your Lasik Recovery

The First 24 Hours After LASIK

Immediately after your LASIK procedure, your vision will likely be blurry, hazy, or sensitive to light. Many patients describe a scratchy or gritty feeling, similar to having an eyelash in the eye. These symptoms are normal and temporary. You’ll be given medicated eye drops, sunglasses, and an eye shield to protect your eyes as you begin to heal. Resting, especially with a nap, is highly recommended since it speeds healing and reduces discomfort.

The First Week After LASIK

During the first week, you may experience fluctuating vision, glare, or halos, particularly at night. You can return to work the next day, but it is recommended that you avoid strenuous exercise, swimming, and rubbing your eyes. You’ll have a follow-up visit the day after surgery and another one after a week to ensure your healing is on track. Dryness is extremely common during this period; using artificial tears frequently will help keep your eyes comfortable.

The First Month After LASIK

Over the next several weeks, your vision will continue to sharpen. While most patients notice improvements within a few days, it can take four to six weeks for vision to fully stabilize. During this time, it’s important to follow all post-operative instructions carefully to ensure optimal healing and the best visual outcome. Follow-up visits may continue after the first month.

Long-term Recovery Expectations

It’s normal to experience mild dryness, occasional blurriness, or sensitivity to light for several months after LASIK. These symptoms improve over time. By using lubricating drops regularly, protecting your eyes from strain, and following Dr. Hu’s instructions, you give your eyes the best chance for a smooth recovery. Many patients achieve 20/20 vision or better after LASIK, but the final results vary depending on individual healing patterns.

LASIK Aftercare Guidelines:

  • Use prescribed eye drops as directed
  • Apply artificial tears frequently to combat dryness
  • Wear sunglasses outdoors to protect against light sensitivity
  • Keep the eye shield on while sleeping for the first few nights
  • Avoid rubbing or touching your eyes
  • Refrain from swimming, hot tubs, and saunas for at least 2 weeks
  • Postpone heavy lifting or strenuous workouts for 1 week
  • Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments
